A whole lot of big-time musicians chase the dragon. Something that has to do with partaking in the finer things in life may it be all about enhancing your mind, heightening your senses until you crash or just letting go and taking a step back from the rat race so they can widen their horizons, forget about the bullshit and unlock their creativity without breaking a sweat. Sometimes just to distance themselves from actualization. Because when you’re all that, an altered state of mind does numbers. Maybe sobriety causes creative impotence but these musicians used substances to fine-tune their minds and they’re pretty darn creative.
1. Ozzy Osbourne
The Black Sabbath frontman was a familiar face for narcotics during the 70s and 80s. Mountain’s guitarist Leslie West introduced him to cocaine. He once snorted a line of ants just because he ran out of coca. Gotta get your psyche on, it’s rock n roll baby.
2. Kurt Cobain
The Nirvana lead had a drawn out history of drug abuse, traces of Heroin & Valium were found in his body. He tried Hash in ’84 but moved onto super-stardom and heroine a couple years later. He had a terrible stomach that plagued him through out his life, he took a lot of pain killers that helped him cope and allow him to let him do what he did best.
3. Amy Winehouse
Her voice wasn’t the only thing that was deep and excessive, her drug problem was too. She cancelled a bunch of shows in 2007 as she was hospitalised because of an overdose of ecstasy, ketamine, cocain & alcohol. The singer was often troubled and altered her mental state to make sure her music career didn’t take a toll.
4. Snoop Dogg
Everybody knows how he does, a regular poster boy for weed. He’s pro all-things-marijuana. ‘No one can outsmoke the Dogg’ is one of many terms flying around with Snoops name on it. Smoking 60 blunts a day isn’t for everyone after all. He wouldn’t be an icon and have fared so well in the industry if not for pot.
5. Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston racked up six grammys and 170 million records but her drug addiction is one conquest she couldn’t formidably conquer. Cocaine was one substance that she used to cope with her life and made sure the drugs helped her separate her miserable conditions from her grammy-winning alter ego.
6. The Beatles
The Fab Four were not so quaint about their experiences with drugs, quite vocal actually. Apart from Marijuana, all 4 were fair game for acid. Paul McCartney said that blotter not only opened his eyes but also turned him into a “better, more honest, more tolerant member of society.” A lot of their work later on was inspired by and well, about acid.
7. Wiz Khalifa
Another primo stoner, only second to Snoop Wiz Khalifa has his own marijuana strain; Khalifa kush. That’s the level he plays at. 9 out of 10 Wiz tracks are inspired or about pot. And 10 out of 10 of his tracks transpired while he was high.
8. Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson was big on prescription drugs. He popped painkillers like peanuts. He used them to numb himself from the racket that his life had become. He also used them to sleep. He was addicted to Propofol. His doctor put him under Propofol right before his death, the doctor is serving time in prison.
9. Noel Gallagher
For Some it’s just how Rock n Roll is.
“Because that’s what you do, innit? I have divine right as a rock star to be like that. You don’t want kids coming backstage and you’re sitting there drinking mineral water. What would they think? You gotta be lying in the corner, halfway into a coma with a bottle of Jack Daniel’s.”
10. David Bowie
Bowie struggled with a Cocaine problem in the 70s. According to several critics his strumming is way off in Station To Station and coca is to blame for all of it. People claimed he used to do ‘bowls of cocaine’.
“I’ve had short flirtations with smack and things, but it was only for the mystery and the enigma. I like fast drugs.”
